Science Grade 6 (Question grid for fist semester)

Shape the Volcanoes:

Cinder Cone: A small, steep-sided volcano.

Composite Volcano: A tall, symmetrical volcano with steep sides.

Shield Volcano: A broad, gently sloping volcano.

Draw an ellipse using a compass to represent the Earth's orbit!

Having discovered the elliptical shape of the planets' orbits, Kepler was able to formulate three laws of planetary motion.

  1. The first law states that every planet orbits the sun in an ellipse, with the sun as one of the foci of the ellipse and an empty point in space as the other.
  2. The second law states that as a planet moves closer to the sun, it travels faster; and as it moves farther away, it slows down.
  3. The third law shows the relationship between a planet's distance from the sun and the time it takes the planet to complete one orbit.

Why is Pluto not a planet?

Pluto follows the first two rules: it is round and orbits the sun. But it does not follow the third rule.

It has not yet cleared the neighbourhood of its orbit. Because it does not follow this rule, Pluto is no longer considered a planet.

Remember the position of the solar system.
