Science Summary 2nd Semester for Grade 2


Science G 2 - Semester II (Page 111-157)

Energy gives us the strength to run.
A force is needed to push or pull something along and make it move.
Moving water is a force that can carry you down the river.
Sometimes we pull to make things go.
Magnet can hold things together. They can also pull on things to make thing move. Nail, paper clip, magnet and other magnetic things can a magnet move.
What do we call the “pull of the earth” is gravity.
Wheels help many things move?
Remember when you are playing a ball. Friction makes your ball stop rolling.
Rub your hands together quickly for 1 or 2 minutes. Then touch your hands to your face, how do your hands feel? Your hands will feel warmer.
Wind is moving air. We cannot see the air; we cannot taste or smell it, but it is there. That is the right opinion about the air.

The air made of a special group of gases that are mixed together in special amounts.
What would happen if the air were made only of carbon dioxide? People and animal will die.
Whenever the air moves, we have wind. Inside our house, we can make wind by using a fan.
Hurricane are windstorms that begin over the ocean. Tornadoes are windstorms that builds up over hot land.
The three things will always decide the weather is the sun, air and water.
Cold air is heavier than warm air. The water went back in to the air. We call this evaporation.
Where is the rain come from? It’s begin to fall when clouds, heavy with water from the air, meet cool air. Snow is the frozen water.

There is no sound on the moon. Even if someone shouts, it would not make a sound on the moon. Sound need materials (air, liquid or solid) to travel. Because there is no air in the moon, sound can not heard by anyone.
The sky is blue because because the sunshine through the band of air.  The sky is dark in outer because there is less air for the sun to shine.

Special Homeworks


Dear students, this is a special homework only for Grade 2 up to 5:
  1. Please do your homework for additional point in your Science progress report.
  2. Prepare the simple materials. You don't have to buy the new one if you have the old.
  3. While you are doing your experiments, Take a picture or video each step and the result..
  4. Make a science experiment report.
  5. Submit your homework at the latest on May 21, 2016!


Grade 2 - Air Pressure Experiment
  1. Does Air Have Weight?
    To begin these air pressure experiments wave your hand back and forth in the air. It's easy to move your hand around because air pressure is pressing onto your hands in all directions. Air actually weighs 14.7 pounds per square inch at sea level. That means that every square inch of your body is being pressed on by 14.7 pounds of pressure.
  2. Materials
    Balloons
    String
    Scotch tape
    Ruler(stick or clothes hanger may also be used
    Needle or sharp pin 
  3. How to do:
    Cut three strings approximately 12 inches long.
    Blow up two balloons so they are the same size. Tie a string to each balloon.
    Tie one of the balloons to each end of the ruler tight enough so the string will not slip.
    Tie a string loosely around the center part of the ruler so that you can slip the knot back and forth until the balloons are balanced.
    Tape the string in place so it will not move when the balloon is deflated. Prick one of the balloons with a needle or sharp pin.
    Watch how the ruler moves upward on the side where the balloon was deflated. If this does not happen it might be because the center string was not tight enough and moved when the balloon was deflated.
    Try the experiment several more times to see if the experiment works consistently. This is the way real scientists do their work. They test their hypothesis several times to make sure the same thing happens consistently.
  4. Extending the experiment
    Try these air pressure experiments. Balance two deflated balloons on a ruler or stick. Take one balloon off the stick and inflate it. Return the balloon to see what happens. Try balancing several balloons on a yard stick. When you have the yardstick in balance. Predict what you think will happen if you deflate all the balloons, one at a time, from left to right. After writing down your prediction, try this air pressure experiment.

Grade 3 - Salt Crystals Project
  1. Can you grow Your own salt crystals?
    Have fun growing your own salt crystals with this simple project. You can do further research with a microscope in KiCS  LAB once you’re finished. Crystals are beautiful to look at and you might even want to start your own collection.
  2. What you'll need:
        A jar
        Water
        About half a cup of salt
        A spoon for stirring
        String
        Scissors
        2 toothpicks
  3. How to do:
        Fill the jar with water.Add about half a cup of salt to the water.
        Mix the solution together with a spoon.
        Cut a piece of string with scissors and tie each end to a toothpick.
        Place the string over the top of the jar so that the string dangles into the middle of the solution and the toothpicks hang over the edge.
        Don’t forget to clean up when you’ve finished.
  4. Observation:
    Crystals can be found grouped together as lots of small crystals or as huge individual crystals. When you look at your crystals, you can examine the differences between them: Are they perfectly formed? What shape are they? What color? Can you see any microorganisms on the crystals?
  5. How it Happens? Write in your science experiment report!

Grade 4 - Ice Cube Experiment
  1. The Lifting Ice Cube experiment demonstrates the melting and freezing properties of water, which results to another property of matter called adherence. Adherence refers to close physical attachment or union of two objects. To further understand this phenomenon, let us do your science experiment!

  2. In this experiment, you will need the following materials:
        Glass of water
        Ice cubes
        String
        Salt
  3. How to do
    Drop an ice cube in the glass of water. Take the string and dangle the end of it on the ice cube, and then keep it still.
    While the string is dangled down onto the ice cube, sprinkle a bit of salt on the ice cube.  Set aside for a few minutes. After some time, try to lift the string and observe what happens to the ice cube.
  4. How it Happens? Write in your science experiment report! ..
Grade 5 - Make a teabag fly
You'll never look at teabags in the same way again
  1. Construct a rocket from a tea bag? Well you can and it’s easy!
    But be warned - it isn’t quite as spectacular as a NASA shuttle launch.
    Remember - always ask an adult for help with matches and don't do this experiment near any flammable materials.
  2. Materials:
        Tea bag (must be stapled at the top)
        Matches or lighter
        Non-flammable plate or ceramic plate
        Water or fire extinguisher (just in case!)
  3. How to do:
        Remove the staple, label and string from the teabag.
        Pour the tea into a bin.
        Unfold the teabag.
        Turn the teabag into a cylinder - make sure there's a space in the centre. You can use your finger if that helps.
        Stand the cylinder on one end on a plate. Make sure it's on a flat surface.
        Use a lighter or match to set the top of the teabag cylinder on fire.
  4. What will happen and how it happens? Write in your science experiment report

Did You Know Earthworm?

Earthworms can produce more compost, in a shorter time, than any other method. Worm castings (the odorless excrement of the earth worm) in the soil are five times as rich in available nitrogen, seven times as rich in available phosphorus, three times as rich in available magnesium, two times as rich in available carbon, one and one half times as rich in available calcium and eleven times as rich in available potassium as anything else in the upper six inches of soil. One thousand earthworms and their descendants, under ideal conditions, could convert approximately one ton of organic waste into high yield fertilizer in one year.

However, the importance of earthworms is not a very modern phenomenon. The Ancient Greeks considered the earthworm to have an important role in improving the quality of the soil. The Greek philosopher Aristotle (384 – 322 B.C.) referred to worms as “the intestines of the earth”.

Did you know the ancient Egyptians were the first to recognize the beneficial status of the earthworm? Cleopatra (69 – 30 B.C.) recognized the earthworms’ contribution to Egyptian agriculture and declared them to be sacred. Removal of earthworms from Egypt was punishable by
death. Egyptian farmers were not allowed to even touch an earthworm for fear of offending the god of fertility. A 1949 study by the USDA confirmed that the great fertility of the soil in the Nile valley was due in large part to the work of earthworms.

Charles Darwin (1809 –1882) studied earthworms for more than forty years and devoted an entire book (The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms) to the earthworm. Darwin said, “It may be doubted that there are many other animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world as have these lowly organized creatures.”

Did you know that worms perform several functions in your garden soil?
  1. Their tunneling activity helps aerate the soil. The channels they make as they move through the soil allow rain to enter the soil more rapidly, reduce water runoff, and reduce the potential for erosion. This also helps improve soil structure by creating a loose soil that is easily penetrated by roots.
  2. Earthworms neutralize soil pH. Their castings are always closer to neutral than the original soil. The pH in acidic soils is lifted, and the pH in alkaline soils is reduced.
  3. Earthworms gradually deepen the topsoil layer by burrowing into the sub-soil and translocating fine mineral particles to the surface in the form of castings.
  4. Earthworms solve waste problems by composting organic matter. Composting with worms occurs four times faster than normal composting.
  5. High earthworm populations contribute to biological pest control as soils with earthworms has been shown to have far fewer parasitic nematodes than soil without earthworms. Many other soil borne diseases also appear to be reduced.

Earthworm castings are a sterile, odorless means to condition your soil and an organic and natural way to provide your plants with the nutrients they need, when they need them. Scientists have shown that castings work extremely well in promoting lush plant growth, but they are not exactly sure why they work as well as they do. It just goes to show that Mother Nature knows best. With their mixing, digging, burrowing, fertilizing, and humus-making activities, earthworms have an immense impact on the soil, its texture, its fertility, and its ability to support everything that lives in or on it, especially plants that form the basis of our food supply. But worms must be fed as they proliferate in direct proportion to the amount of organic matter incorporated into the
soil.

So what do earthworms eat? Earthworms eat dirt! The earthworm is specially adapted for eating and digesting decaying leaves and other organic material in the soil. Animal manures are an important food source for earthworms. They eat living organisms such as nematodes, protozoans, bacteria, and fungi in soil. Worms will also feed on the decomposing remains of other animals .

Each animal is part of God's design, or plan, for our world, just as we are. When God formed each kind of animal, He gave it a job to do, a reason for living. He gave each animal the instincts and equipment to do the job that He planned for it.

Without spiders, we would have too many insects. Spiders catch insects in their webs. The webs are made from silk which the spiders make in their own bodies. Chicken give us eggs and meat to eat. Chickens also help us by catching insects. Their feet and beaks are designed to help them catch the insects.

A praying mantis has six legs, but walks on only four. He holds his front legs up in front of his face, it looks like he is praying. His fronts legs, which have little spikes on them, are designed to hold an insect for his dinner. The praying mantis is one of God;s gifts to the farmer. The praying mantis eats beetles, caterpillars, fliers, moths, and grasshoppers which would hurt the farmer's crops.

Enjoying Exercise Rest, and Sleep


Exercise is fun, it can be work or play. Exercise makes our muscles strong. We could not move without muscles. The stronger our muscles are, the better we can work and play.

Remember that food only builds muscles. Food plus exercise builds strong muscles. When we exercise outside, we also get fresh air and sunshine. Sunshine kills some germs. Sunshine hepls our skin to make vitamin D. This vitamin helps us to grow and to stay healthy. But, we can not exercise all the time. we need to take time to rest, too. The harder we exercise, the more rest we need. We need to sleep about 10-12 hours each night. When we are a tiny baby, we needs the most sleep.

Your body changes the food into energy. God designed or planned for each food to be different.
Some foods work best to give us energy because they are full of sugar and starch. We store energy in our body, its called fat. The fat from whales called blubber.
