Every leaf is a complex mechanism working to produce food for the plant by means of a chemical process called photosynthesis. A leaf needs three ingredients in order to do its work: water, air, and light.
The plant get water from the ground and transports it to the leaf through the roots and stem. Air enters the leaf through holes or pores called stomata (singular: stoma). The light from sunlight is necessary for photosynthesis.
The other part of the plant, located bellow the ground, is called the root system.
The stem is strengthened by a tough fibrous material manufactured by plant cell out of glucose. this material called cellulose, forms a strong cell wall around the membrane of each plant cell.
Tropisms: the growth of a plant in response to a condition in its environment.
- geotropism: a plant's response to gravity
- hydrotropism: a plant's response to water
- phototropism: a plant's response to light
- thigmotropism: a plant's response to touch
